The Pacific Ocean from the northeastern tip of Honshu to point just south of Hachinohe is off limits for swimming, surfing and other water sports due to strong currents and undertow. However, the Japanese have build a swimming area by placing a breakwater across a small area adjacent to the Misawa Fishing Port. This is the only beach north of Hachinohe where base personnel are permitted to swim.

The area has a nice beach and a small refreshment stand/toilet facility. It's close enough so you can take a few hours and go relax in the sun.
There is a long stretch of beach south of the breakwater but that is unprotected and off limits. There are "No Swimming" signs posted there.
To get there, go out the main gate and turn left at the first light. Continue on thru town for about 6 km until you come to a traffic light at a "T" intersection. This is Route 338. Turn right onto 338 then left at the third traffic light (its about 1.8 km // you will see a sign for the Misawa Fishing Port and the beach just before the first light but if you turn there, you have to wind your way around and through the fishing port. Its better to go on and turn at the third light.) Then head down the hill towards the ocean. At the bottom of the hill, turn right at the "T" and drive into the parking lot that is straight ahead of you. The beach is on the left.
