Shimoda Swan Fesival


Graceful Swans Magi Lake in Shimoda Park is a famous winter habitat for swans that migrate from the northern reaches of Siberia in search of food. They stay from early October until March. Most of the swans that winter in Shimoda are Whistling Swans and Whooper Swans, although some American Whistling Swans and Mute Swans have been observerd. They also joined by a variety of ducks.

Each March, Shimoda Town sponsors a Swan Day Festival at Magi Lake. Activities include an Awards Ceremony for the Swan Photo Contest, food booths, including a special Shimoda Stew and Sweet Sake, Bingo (1pm) a Swan Impersonation Contest (10:30am til 2pm). Opening ceremonies begin at 10am. Bring bread to feed the birds and dress warm.

How to get there:

Go out the POL Gate and turn left at the 10th light. There is a Circle K on the corner before you turn. Continue on this road for 2.7km and turn left at the traffic light which is alongside a used car dealer. Follow the curved road for 1km. Turn right at the intersection and follow this road for about 1.3km until you see Shimoda Park. Follow the crowd.
