"About Japan" provides information about your new surroundings and helps prepare you to confidently venture out into the Japanese community. Having spent 24 years in the Air Force, I know how stressful a PCS move can be. Add a new language and unfamiliar customs into the mix and an overseas move can become quite daunting. With over 34 years in Japan and 30+ in Misawa, I feel fairly qualified to help you learn about my home. While my target audience is the fine folks serving our country on U.S. military bases and government facilities throughout Japan, this e-book should be of value to any one coming to Japan.
I initially planned to create a few web pages as an online guide to Japan and things Japanese that would help you enjoy your stay in this fascinating country. So I sat down and dutifully listed all the topics I wanted to cover and wrote a preliminary outline. As I went along, I began to think that a few static web pages might not suffice. The project was growing in size and scope and then there was the issue of portablity. If I built it as web pages, you would only be able read it on the computer. Over the next few years, (yes, years) I researched and wrote in my spare time, concentrating more on content than the eventual host vehicle. When I finally finished, I had a raw product that was over 120 (8.5 X 11) pages in 11 chapters. It was easy to see that static web pages were truly not the answer. But I had spent hundreds of hours on the project! Deleting valuable data to make it web-suitable was not an option nor was I about to just give up on it.
I finally settled on an electronic book (e-book) in PDF format. This allowed me to include all the info I wanted to present in an easy-to-read document that everyone can open with the free PDF reader. The result is a fairly comprehensive look into many aspects of your new temporary home. "About Japan: Newbie to Knowledgeable" will teach you about Japan’s customs, history, society, culture and much more. Over 120+ pages in 11 chapters full of information you should know.
